Positive Behaviour Support

Positive behaviour support is a modern, internationally accepted approach, and is exactly as it sounds – a supportive, positive and non-punitive approach to working with behaviours of concern.

Positive Behaviour Support is based upon research in applied behaviour analysis and the term encompasses a number of strategies and methods that aim to assist a person to reduce challenging behaviour and increase their quality of life through teaching them new skills and adjusting their environment to promote positive behaviour changes.

Positive Behaviour Support interventions are considered effective when they lead to enhancement of positive social interactions across work, school, recreational, and community settings and result in an increase in a person’s quality of life.

Some key points of Positive Behaviour Support include:

  • There is a reason behind most challenging behaviour, such as a need not being met
  • Every person should be treated with compassion and respect regardless of their behaviour
  • We should not try to control other people, but should support them in their own behaviour change process
  • Every person has unique strengths and talents that can be utilised
  • Everyone is entitled to quality of life and effective services
  • Positive responses will be more effective than coercion and punishment
  • The knowledge that is available about how to provide support for positive behaviour can make a big difference
